Love Letter

To celebrate my birthday this year I wrote a series of letters. In honor of Valentine’s Day, I wanted to share this one in particular with you.
A Letter to My Love,
Today is my birthday. In honor of my anniversary on this planet, I wanted to write to those who have had the most impact on my being. You, my fruit loop, are one of the great ones. I am blessed to know you as my friend, my partner, and my love. Should the world implode tomorrow and we all be left in our underwear without chocolate or coffee, I would leave the good earth knowing I lived well with you by my side.
First, let me say I am still enamored by your presence. But this was not always how I felt. At first I found your ways strange. I misread your spaciousness as aloofness and your easy demeanor as a lazy one. Little did I know, this was highlighting my own stranglehold on life, to control all things outside my reach. It took time to realize but eventually, through your grace, I found mine.
Second, let me say this. I have found a love with you that keeps me silent on most days for I long for nothing. But I believe our love is beyond even us. When I look at what we’ve created, it seems that our union has done more for the world than it has for me or you. Through loving and being loved, I was so compelled to hold others in the same way—to nurture, to heal, and to create through work, life, and art. But it was beyond what I could have wanted for myself. We all deserve an intimacy such as this—a bond that is vast yet ordinary. For each of us embody perfection, no change required. I understood this when I realized you weren’t just loving me. You were seeing me.
This, I believe, is what is most remarkable about our love. At its core, we are witness to each other’s great unknown and carry with us a sense of curiosity, awe, and delight.
My sweet love, what a gift it has been to have you in my life for nearly seven years. You are my joy. Happy birthday to me.
