Can I Have a French Fry?

Friday, 11th July 2014

No. I mean, yes, of course. Totally. (French fry eating commences) Okay, that was enough. No. I mean, yes, of course. Totally. (French fry eating commences.) Okay, that’s enough. You’ve basically eaten them all. Great. Now I’m starving.

We’re ridiculous. If we could tune into the soundtrack playing within our minds, I don’t think it would be so pretty. Whatever your French fry is ~ love, work, food, drugs, stealing, lying, cheating ~ it’s all the same. It’s about the impulse to control our environment.

But the aftermath is inevitable. There’s a good chance that at some point, you’ll feel jealous and exhausted, stuck in the same place, and no amount of concealer will hide the bags under your eyes.

So what do you do when you’re not getting your way?

a) Cope (I need to forget this is happening.)
b) Fight (This is not happening.)
c) Run (This will never happen again.)
d) Forfeit (Whatever. I don’t care if it happens.)

They’re all reactions. They aren’t dealing with the thing at all.

So what if you didn’t react? What if you just remained? As in, This is happening. This is happening. This is happening.

How do you remain? By staying right on the top of the feeling. Remaining means not spinning out into story. It means staying with the physical sensations, noticing what you want to do, and watching, witnessing, without pulling the trigger and responding.

This is why meditation is so darn helpful. No matter what is going on or coming up, you do absolutely nothing. Instead of reacting, you remain.
