How do you know you’ve succeeded? You reach your goal. So why do you feel like the race is always on?

It’s been days or weeks and you still haven’t been able to totally cross an item off your list. Oftentimes it’s because you underestimate the required work. You may be confusing what looks like a to-do with a project, which often has several to-do items within it. If your goal is to sell your house, then as a project, it’ll have a few steps.

For example:

  • Re-paint the living room.
  • Hire movers.
  • Pack bedroom.
  • Hire a designer to stage the house.
  • Take pictures of the house.
  • Call to list it with an agent.
  • Gather all documents for the new buyer.
  • Get a massage to get rid of your headache.
  • Visualize the day you sell the house.
  • Plan a celebration.

You get the gist.

Each action is a solid step toward finishing that project.

Here are three bits of advice I’ve found ridiculously helpful:

  1. Start with the verb.
Schedule session. Type up draft. Call Peter. This is more directive than paperwork.
  2. Set a deadline.
Due 7/31 is better than I’m working on it.
  3. Celebrate the completion of each to-do.
Projects take time. Celebrate your small wins as you cross off each to-do. Get a facial. Enjoy some raw chocolate. Paint.
