Your GG Spot

Your GG Spot

Thursday, 26th June 2014

It’s really easy to think you’re all alone, or worse, that your face is pressed up against a cold stone wall with your arms tied, starving and you have no options other than fight or freak the eff out. And those are the better options if we have half a mind. More often than not, we want to include others in our rage, spread our anger, or blame others for our misery as a way to commit to our own unhappiness.

I get it. I’ve been just as twisted and tortured in my mental prison cell. I have felt that there are no other outs other than the only one I see, that there is no answer at all, and so I give up and wait.

For what?

For someone to save me, for Superman, or God or yoga or chocolate. Sometimes the saviors come with treats or words of wisdom but I find that I’m always wanting something else, someone else, someone like me. And then it hits me. It’s me I’m waiting for. It’s my chance to take action, seek help, and dive into the waves of my own becoming. But instead of seizing the moment, I let my cowardice take over. I waste my time and wallow and find myself thinking on repeat, no one will help me.

It’s not easy to feel better when you’re miserable. But sometimes we forget that the answers are not always spiritually complex or far from reach and they don’t necessarily require a passport and a bottomless bank account. So I thought it might be helpful to make a list of those simple ways to tap into your GG (Greater Good) spot especially when you’re mind is in an abyss of negativity and you can’t seem to think straight. Here are a few of my favorites:

Write, write, write it out. Your brain will feel lighter and your heart will too.

Drop your agenda and get into a midday yoga class.

Swim laps. Full body activities will change you.

Get a massage. Touch is our first language and this gets you back to basics quick.

Practice the even breath—four counts in/four counts out—for as long as it takes for your mind to calm.

Listen to Stevie Wonder sing anything, but specifically, “If Your Love Cannot Be Moved.”

Chill out, light a few candles, and take a salt bath.

Do a juice cleanse for 1, 3, or 5 days—detoxing is awesome.

Compliment people. Anyone. You’ll feel their happiness if you can’t find yours.

Fake a smile for at least 45 seconds. Your brain can’t totally tell the difference right away and you’ll start to feel like smiling. Imagine that.

Watch reruns of I Love Lucy or the Harpo brothers, or any classic comedy like Chaplin falling out of a high story building.

Get to a body of water and take in a lake, ocean, or stream at your local park.

Wear bright colors.

Get your hair done.

Put on a facial mask.

Eat a gigantic bowl of kale and a whole avocado with pumpkin seeds, cranberries, and flax oil.

Pray.

Meditate.

Volunteer.

Babysit.

Clean your house.

Draw.

Read The Little Prince.

Make a list of everyone and everything you’re grateful for that has changed your life for the better, no matter how small.

Do Zumba—you’ll either love it or feel totally ridiculous, but either way, you’ll feel different.

That’s good for now. But there’s so much more. The goal of course is to realize how vast life is and how many people and places and parts of us are waking up, reaching out, and offering support. You are not alone. But you’re the only one who can save you from you.

Now make your list of Greater Good spots and share it here, because we all have temporary moments of amnesia and you could help someone touch their greater good.

So saddle up—how do you access your greater good?
